Book Week 2013
Language and literacy plays a very important part of the daily curriculum at Kenmore Park Kindergarten. The kindy last week celebrated along with local schools and libraries – BOOK WEEK. Book week is the longest running children’s festival in Australia, celebrating its 68th year in 2013. Kenmore Park had a wonderful selection of books for parents to purchase and read at home with their own families, but this year, they also felt that this event could help out those less fortunate in the Brisbane community. The committee asked parents to donate good books from their own bookshelves at home, which could be donated to Brisbane community centres that support young families.
Floods of wonderful children’s books came in from our kindergarten families, keen to support and pass on the love of books to others. “We have been overwhelmed in the response from our Kenmore Park families – it is such a simple way to help others and share the joy and imagination of story books!” states co-director Kate Burrell, “we hope to do this each year at Book Week!”
Kenmore Park daily teaching curriculum uses books to help discover more about educational concepts, to help learn more about concepts such as rhyme, learn how literacy is a fundamental way of growing our understanding of print and letters, not to mention the enjoyment of books. “Reading to young children is such a treasured part of our day! Sharing in the joy of books with our classes is such a valuable way to learn and develop our creative thinking,” says Kate. “The teachers of Kenmore Park love that our kindergarten has such a generous and involved group of families – they see our vision of helping the community and passing on the love of books and reading!”
